OUR MISSION & WORK
/OUR MISSION
The mission of the Albert Einstein Institution is to advance the worldwide study and strategic use of nonviolent action in conflict. The Institution is committed to:
Defending democratic freedoms and institutions
Opposing oppression, dictatorship and genocide
Reducing reliance on violence as an instrument of policy
/WHAT WE DO
The Institution has been responsible for the translation and dissemination of some of the most influential texts on nonviolent action. Many of these works have been studied among resistance movements worldwide.
Since our founding, our work has focused on conducting academic research on nonviolent action and sharing the results of that research through print and electronic publications as well as through workshops and consultations with groups preparing for or engaged in nonviolent struggles. We have published over 96 texts in nearly 40 languages, and have provided over 180 formal and substantive consultations to activists in over 65 countries (about one third of the countries in the world).
The Institution has overseen the creation, translation, and dissemination of some of the most influential texts on nonviolent action. Many of these works have been studied among resistance movements worldwide.
Today, our work is divided into the following areas:
Conducting original research to understand how nonviolent action can be conducted effectively and how its opponents seek to thwart and undermine it. This includes capturing the learnings and insights being generated among communities around the world and case studies from contemporary movements as well as academic research on emerging dynamics.
Publishing and distributing materials on nonviolent action to ensure they remain accessible to as many people as possible. This includes our in-house publications program, translations, and new media production.
Educating the public and policymakers about the power and potential of nonviolent action as a viable alternative to violent conflict and its role in safeguarding democratic freedoms and institutions.
Supporting resistance movements through our long-running educational workshops and consultations.
/Ongoing PRojects
We currently have two major ongoing projects:
Development of an online People-Powered Training Platform to democratize access to expert-led training and workshops for groups who wish to understand or engage in nonviolent action.
Our Climate Justice Fellowship Program, now in its second year, is a 15-month fellowship program, offered with the Right Livelihood Foundation. The Fellowship aims to mentor a small group of climate justice activists using the principles of strategic nonviolent action to address global climate justice issues.
